Drake VomBaur Wins National Recruiting Showcase Championship
Cedar Falls, Iowa — Bear Cave’s own Drake VomBaur captured the 2024 National High School Recruiting Showcase Championship at 113 pounds, securing his place among the nation’s elite high school wrestlers.
Drake’s path to the title was filled with grit, composure, and relentless drive — none more evident than in his semifinal comeback. Down 7–3 with just 11 seconds remaining, Drake reversed his opponent to his back for a stunning four-point move, sealing his spot in the finals.
After the match, Drake reflected on his mindset and passion for the sport:
“I just love wrestling. I’m so glad there were tough matches out here. You’ve got to love the battle — I loved every second of it.”
He also shared how his attitude on the mat mirrors the lessons he gives younger wrestlers at Bear Cave:
“I coach kids in wrestling, and I tell them never to quit. I didn’t want to be a hypocrite. I just kept fighting, and when I saw my chance, I took it.”
Drake credits much of his success to his father and coach, Ben VomBaur, saying:
“He’s not only my coach — he’s my friend. He gives me great advice, and I really appreciate him.”
Looking ahead, Drake’s sights are set on even bigger goals:
“I want to win Doc B. That’s my next big goal. I’m going to train hard, love the fight, and keep pushing myself.”
Drake’s passion, resilience, and leadership continue to set the standard for Bear Cave athletes everywhere.
